Plywood Dimensions

Plywood is a product widely used as a moulding material in the construction industry. Plywood consists of many layers of wood glued together. These layers provide the durability, flexibility and cutability of plywood according to the desired dimensions. Plywood is divided into two types as film coated or filmless. Film-coated plywood is plywood with a film layer impregnated with phenolic resin applied on its surface. Filmless plywood is plywood without a film layer on the surface. Film coated plywood is more suitable for outdoor use as it is more resistant to water, moisture and chemicals. Filmless plywood is mostly used indoors.

The dimensions of plywood depend on parameters such as the number of layers, layer thickness, total thickness, width and length. Generally, the number of layers of plywood is an odd number and can vary from 3 to 21. As the number of layers increases, the durability and weight of plywood increases. Layer thickness can vary between 1.4 mm and 4 mm. The total thickness can vary between 4 mm and 40 mm depending on the number of layers and layer thickness.
The width and length dimensions of plywood are 1220 mm x 2440 mm as standard. However, it can be produced in different sizes upon request.

In our country, plywood can be found in thicknesses ranging from 6 mm to 30 mm, in the following sizes.
2500 mm x 1250 mm
3000 mm x 1500 mm
2440 mm x 1220 mm
Other plywood sizes that can be found in our country are as follows;
1220 x 1220/2440 mm (plywood short side 122cm, long side 122 cm or 244 cm)
1250 x 1250/2500/3000 mm (plywood short side 125cm, long side 125cm, 250cm or 300 cm)
1500 x 1500/2500/3000 mm (plywood short side 150cm, long side 150cm, 250cm or 300 cm)
1525 x 1525/2500 mm (plywood short side 152,5cm, long side 152,5 cm or 250 cm)

Plywood panels are formed by combining layers smaller than their original dimensions. The widest plywood panels that can be manufactured have the following dimensions:

The largest film-coated plywood size: 12500 x 2750 mm (2,75 m width, 12,50 m length)
The largest Plywood size without film: 12300 x 2700 mm (2.70m wide, 12.30m long)

Different sizes of plywood have advantages during loading on lorries. For example, a sheet of 1220 mm x 2440 mm x 18 mm, which is the standard size of film-coated plywood, weighs approximately 35 kg. An average of 1000 of these boards can be transported in a lorry. If the thickness of these boards were 21 mm, their weight would be approximately 40 kg and only 800 pieces could be transported in a lorry. This would be a disadvantage in terms of both cost and time. Therefore, it is important to choose the most suitable size of plywood according to the carrying capacity.

Another issue related to plywood dimensions is cutting. Plywood can be cut according to the desired dimensions, but some points should be considered during cutting. Firstly, the place to be cut must be flat and clean. The saw or machine to be used while cutting must be sharp and suitable. The cutting speed should be kept low to prevent the edges of the plywood from breaking or cracking during cutting. After cutting, the edges of the plywood should be sanded or polished.
