What is Scaffolding Project? How to Prepare a Scaffolding Project?

Scaffolding Project: Assurance of Construction Safety

The scaffolding project is the assurance that the scaffolding systems to be used in the construction sector are designed in accordance with the specified standards and will be installed safely. In this article, we will examine in detail what scaffolding projects are, how they are prepared and why they are critical for occupational safety.

What is a Scaffolding Project?

Scaffolding project is a process in which scaffolding systems designed in accordance with the specific needs and requirements of each construction project are created with simulations, statically calculated and reported. Scaffolding projects, whose main purpose is to ensure occupational safety, are a legal requirement at every stage of construction. Scaffolding project and scaffolding report are among the documents submitted for municipal licensing and these documents must be carefully prepared.

Things to Know When Preparing Scaffolding Project

When preparing a scaffolding project, it is important to consider the following elements:

1. Scaffolding System Selection: The first step is to select the scaffolding system suitable for the project. Factors such as whether the scaffolding is exterior or under formwork scaffolding should be taken into consideration. In addition, it should be determined whether mesh or tarpaulin will be covered on the scaffolding and static calculations should be made accordingly.

2. Static Calculations: The scaffolding project is prepared by civil engineers or static project engineers. These professionals create the project by calculating all loads on a structure. These calculations determine the carrying capacity and durability of the scaffolding system.

3. Programmes Used: In addition to static calculations, computer-aided design programmes are also used in the preparation of the scaffolding project. These programmes ensure that the work is done quickly and accurately. For example, programmes such as SAP2000, STA4CAD, ideCAD, Tekla Structures, Etabs and AutoCad are used to create the scaffolding project.

4. Compliance with Standards: Scaffolding projects should be prepared in accordance with the standards set by TSE (Turkish Standards Institute). Standards such as TS EN 12810 and TS EN 12811 standards for facade scaffolds, TS EN 12813 for under formwork scaffolding systems and TS EN 1065 for telescopic strut systems must be complied with.

5. Site Responsibilities: The erection, use and dismantling of the scaffolding system must be supervised by the engineers in charge. The engineers who will carry out these inspections must be experienced in scaffolding and have received the necessary training.

Scaffolding Project: Professional Dimension

The transition to safe scaffolding systems in our country started to be inspected by TSE in 2015. Finding engineers or companies that can make static calculations of the scaffolding was a challenging process at the beginning. However, engineers and companies specialising in this field over time led to scaffolding projects becoming their own sector. Today, there are many companies that prepare scaffolding projects. Manufacturer companies offer static scaffolding projects prepared within the scope of TSE certificate, but it should not be forgotten that a separate scaffolding project should be prepared in accordance with the special needs of each construction and each building. These projects should reflect a professional approach to maximise work safety. Companies and engineers who prepare scaffolding projects are the guarantee of a safe future in the construction industry.
